Guide to Lolab & Bangus Valley
Known as the "Wadi-e-Lolab," this valley is celebrated for its breathtaking beauty and serene atmosphere. It is one of the most fertile areas in Kashmir, dotted with fruit orchards and rice fields. The valley is approximately 5km wide and 25km long, making it perfect for leisurely exploration.
The Mystery of Kalaroos
One of the most intriguing sites in Lolab is Kalaroos. The name is believed to be derived from "Qil-e-Roos" (Fort of Russia). There are caves here with intricate stone carvings, and local folklore suggests that tunnels from these caves once connected Kashmir to Russia. While the tunnels are now blocked, the site remains a fascinating archaeological mystery.
Bangus Valley Biosphere
Bangus is an emerging eco-tourism destination. It is a unique biosphere with a diverse range of flora and fauna. The valley is divided into Bod Bangus (Big Bangus) and Lokut Bangus (Small Bangus). The meadows here are vast and flat, ideal for walking and picnicking. Unlike Gulmarg, there is no infrastructure like hotels or gondolas here, preserving its natural charm.
Travel Tips
Accommodation in these areas is limited to J&K Tourism guest houses and a few private homestays. It is essential to book in advance. Mobile connectivity can be spotty, with BSNL and Jio offering the best coverage. Always carry warm clothes even in summer, as evenings can get chilly.
