The Tangmarg Chain Rule:
Srinagar taxis are NOT allowed to go up to Gulmarg when it snows. You MUST transfer to a local Union Taxi with tire chains at Tangmarg. Cost: ₹2500-₹3000 (Return).

You can rent long coats and gumboots at Tangmarg shops. Highly recommended to keep your own clothes dry.

Gulmarg Gondola
Takes you from the resort (8,694 ft) to Kongdoori (Phase 1) and then to Apharwat Peak (13,058 ft). The views of Nanga Parbat and LOC are mesmerizing from the top.
Apharwat Peak
Accessible via Gondola Phase 2. It remains covered in snow almost all year round. It is the starting point for extreme skiers and offers a literal "top of the world" feeling.
Drung Waterfall
Located near Tangmarg. In winter, this waterfall completely freezes into massive icicles, creating a "Frozen" movie-like scene. Accessible by Hire ATV Bikes Only.
St. Mary's Church
A Victorian-style church built in 1902. Standing amidst the golf course, its gray stone walls and green roof look picturesque, especially when surrounded by snow.
Maharani Temple
Also known as the Mohinishwar Shivalaya, this red-roofed temple sits on a small hillock in the center of Gulmarg. It was the royal temple of the Dogra kings.
Strawberry Valley
A hidden gem accessible by ATV or pony. In summer, you can walk through fresh strawberry plantations. It's a favorite spot for Bollywood film shootings.

1. Skiing & Snowboarding
Gulmarg is the "Skiing Capital of India". Beginners can take lessons on the baby slopes near the golf course, while pros head to Phase 2 for deep powder runs. Instructors and equipment are readily available for rent.
2. ATV & Snow Bike Rides
Traverse the rugged terrain and mud trails in summer or the snow tracks in winter on a powerful ATV. It's the best way to see the outer circle of Gulmarg including Strawberry Valley and the Children's Park.
3. Golfing at World's Highest Course
Play a round at the Gulmarg Golf Club, situated at 2,650 meters. Established by the British in 1911, it is an 18-hole course with stunning views. Equipment can be hired locally. (Summer Only).
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I book Gondola tickets?
Tickets MUST be booked online at the official website jammuandkashmircablecar.com. Offline tickets are extremely rare. Book at least 2-3 weeks in advance for peak season.
Can I drive my own car to Gulmarg in winter?
Usually, no. Unless you have a 4x4 vehicle with anti-skid chains and experience driving on ice, police will stop you at Tangmarg. You must hire a local union taxi with chains.
Is it safe for children and elderly at Phase 2?
Phase 2 is at 13,000+ feet. Oxygen levels are lower. It is generally safe for short visits, but those with heart conditions, asthma, or infants under 2 years should consult a doctor or stick to Phase 1.
What clothes should I pack for winter?
Thermals (upper and lower), heavy woolens, waterproof gloves, woolen cap, and waterproof jacket. You can also rent long overcoats and gumboots at Tangmarg.
Are there ATMs in Gulmarg?
There are 2-3 ATMs (J&K Bank, SBI) near the market area, but they frequently run out of cash due to high tourist influx. Always carry sufficient cash from Srinagar.
How much does skiing cost?
A beginner's package (Instructor + Skis + Boots) usually ranges from ₹2,500 to ₹4,000 per day. Sledges cost ₹500-₹1000 depending on bargaining.
Is mobile network available?
Only Postpaid connections work in Kashmir (Jio, Airtel, BSNL). Data connectivity is generally good in Gulmarg main area but may drop at Phase 2.
How far is the Gondola from the parking area?
It's about 1-1.5 km. You can walk (20 mins), take a pony, or in winter, take a sledge. Taxis drop you at the main parking, not the Gondola gate.
Is snow available in Summer (May/June)?
The main meadow will be green, but you will almost always find snow at Phase 2 (Apharwat Peak) throughout the year.
Are there guides in Gulmarg?
Yes, many. Be careful of unregistered guides (touts) who may overcharge. You technically don't "need" a guide for sightseeing, but they are helpful for skiing, Gondola etc.
